A freak goal by goalkeeper Tim Howard gave Everton the lead but a comeback from Bolton with goals from Ngog and captain Gary Cahill gave the visitors the three points in a 2-1 win.

It was a quiet first half at Goodison Park with each side trying to press through the wind on Merseyside.

A great low cross from debutant Landon Donovan 12 minutes in was steered wide by Denis Stracquilasi. The home side continued to press on and at the half hour mark, Saha played through Osman who put the ball just wide of the post.

The main talking point of the first half came just before halftime when Donovan was through on goal then was challenged by Bolton defender Sam Ricketts in the box. Referee Phil Dowd waived off penalty shouts and gave Everton a corner.

In first half injury time Bolton hit Everton on the break with Ngog being played through for a great goalscoring opportunity but was denied by a great save from Howard.

The second half saw Bolton come out stronger, with Petrov putting in a Mark Davies whose strike was met by a great save from the in-form Tim Howard.

Bolton kept on the pressure as Ngog was given space to curl one at goal only to be denied again by Howard.

The deadlock was finally broken on the 63rd minute with a freak goal from Everton keeper Howard.

Howard cleared from his own box, only to see his clearance bounce up and get carried over Bolton keeper Adam Bogdan by the extreme winds at Goodison Park.2012 pro bowl jerseys

But Bolton responded immediately as Ngog’s quick feet got him past the Everton defense before slotting past Howard.

On 75 minutes Sylvian Distin gave away a free kick just outside the box which was whipped in and punched away by Howard. Chris Eagles collected and passed through to Cahill, who then slotted past Howard to give Bolton the lead.

A late push by Everton saw a Leighton Baines free kick hit the bar on 90 minutes but it wasn’t enough as Bolton took the three points.
